in extremis humanitarian medical interventionLife for the poor sometimes means treading a narrow day-to-day path between survival and oblivion. When a breadwinner is injured, the results can be catastrophic for families. In cases of extreme need, BSSPI helps pay emergency medical expenses for the working poor. A BSSPI staff member works with local treatment centers in an ongoing effort to identify the most destitute cases where illness or injury of a wage earner puts a family at risk. Meet some of the people we have helped return to work:
Soe Paing, a farmer struggling to raise crops in the devastation zone of Cyclone Nargis, injured his leg and back when he fell carrying a heavy sack of rice. BSSPI paid for his medical treatment, enabling him to return to work. We are also helping him with treatments for a painful skin disease.
Khin Maung Myint, a motorcycle courier, was badly injured in a traffic accident. He had no money to pay for emergency room care and surgery to mend his broken jaw. BSSPI was there.
Myo Myint, a carpenter, injured himself in a fall from a rooftop. He was unable to work and unable to pay for medical treatment. BSSPI paid for his surgery, pharmacy and outpatient expenses. |
